The US leads the world in average sugar consumption per capita per year. As you can see from the graph below, average sugar consumption in the 1820s was about 10 lbs per person per year. Compare that with a high around 120 lbs per person per year in the 2000s Andy you get about a 1200% increase! While our sugar consumption has increased astronomically, our bodies and our physiology have pretty much remained the same so can you imagine how your pancreas & liver feel trying to process 12x the amount of a natural sugar intake?

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU EAT EXCESS SUGAR?
Your liver first converts a small portion of the excess sugar to stored carbohydrate called glycogen for short term energy use. Then after your glycogen stores are full, usually about 1500-2000 kcals worth, your body converts the excess sugar to triglycerides which ultimately get deposited for more long term storage, a.k.a. body fat. WHY IS EXCESS BODY FAT PRODUCTION HARMFUL?
Well, there is a certain percentage of your weight as body fat that is healthy but after that amount is fulfilled, excess body fat starts to build up attaching to your intestines and vital organs.
